INTRODUCTION
Search engine marketing (SEM) is the collective term for all the know-how and techniques to position a website higher in search engine results. Search engine marketing can be divided into two major approaches: organic search optimisation and sponsored search advertising. One approach doesn’t exclude the other, they are complimentary.
Organic search optimisation basically is the modification of a website in order for it to achieve a higher ranking in a search engine’s organic search results. These are the search results in Google that occur in the middle of the page. Their ranking is directly influenced by how the website is built, which words are found on it, the number of web pages, etc.
Sponsored search advertising is basically an advertising campaign conducted on a search engine. A These Days SEM consultant decides the key words or phrases by which the client wants to be found and a pay per click is set. Every time somebody searches for one of these words, a sponsored search result appears in the right hand column of Google. The copy of this sponsored search result is written by These Days, in consultation with the client and with Google’s restrictions. Only if somebody actually clicks on the sponsored search result, does a cost per click have to be paid. The popularity of the word(s) determines how high this cost per click will be, though a maximum amount can be set at all times.

ORGANIC SEARCH OPTIMISATION

Keyword Analysis
These Days determines the ideal set of keywords. These keywords have the best traffic–competition balance and will be used further in the search optimisation project.
Website Audit
Based on the code, structure and content of the website, These Days determines the best way of optimising the website for search engines.
Linking Audit
These Days examines the link popularity of the website (= the number and quality of inbound links, a determining ranking factor) and advise on how to improve it.
Deliverable
A customised organic search engine optimisation guide that describes A to Z how to change the website yourself in order to gain organic ranking in search engines.

Containing a keyword analysis, a website audit and a linking audit. (cf. above)
Organic search optimisation
These Days implements the findings of the organic search consultancy, given the following restrictions:
- Optimisation for max. 2 languages
- Focus on 10 keywords per language (max. 10 + 10 keywords)
- Focus on the 3 major search engines: Google, MSN and Yahoo!
The objective is to achieve a significant raise in search engine referrals.
During this phase, depending on the requirements, the following tasks may be performed:
- Structure Optimisation: if necessary These Days changes the website’s structure and eventually add new parts to it.
- Code Optimisation: the website’s coding is made “search engine compliant”. The code is changed in a manner that search engines can index the entire website more easily. Additionally clean coding supports better ranking.
- Copy Optimisation: the adaptation of the website’s copy in order to integrate the selected keywords into the website. It’s important to integrate them at the right spots and in the right proportion.
- Search Engine Submission: These Days submits the website to all selected search engines. We never use automated tools because this can harm the website’s ranking.
Reporting
These Days reports the ranking evolution and provides by e-mail a detailed report per quarter (4 reports in total).

Keyword Analysis
These Days analyses keywords in terms of relevancy, visibility and competitiveness. The most relevant keywords and the best buys are selected.
Copywriting
A copywriter writes in close collaboration with a SEM consultant the copy for the sponsored search results. This copy is adapted to the necessary languages.
Geo-targeting
Targeting on Benelux only. Additional countries are optional.
Languages
Dutch and French. Additional languages are optional.
Registration
Submission of the necessary material (url, description, …) to the search engines.
Reporting
These Days provides detailed bimonthly reporting (6 reports in total) showing the number of impressions, clicks, CTR, cost per click, conversion rate, … for each keyword.
