Chiquita
CONCEPT
Chiquita received a Rainforest Alliance Certificate (= a eco quality label) because they grow their bananas with respect for their employees and the environment (= pay more than average, built houses for their employees, planted over 800.000 trees,...). Nevertheless a lot of people think Chiquita is a typical example of a 'global' company taking disadvantage of their dominance.
To make people understand they grow their bananas with respect, we created a SIMS-like game in which people have to run their own plantation and grow their own bananas. They have to try to grow as much of them as possible, but they also have to pay their workers, plant trees, build houses etc, or otherwise they face a game over.
While playing this game it only takes 5 minutes to convince people Chiquita is not neglecting its social responsibility. And on top of that it’s fun to grow stuff, some players spent over 280 hours game play in one month , some 21.000 plantations sauw the light, nearly 700.000 trees were planted and 9.500.000 bananas were grown.
In a day and age where globalization is such a big topic, this unconventional and fresh approach is innovative because as one of the only big brands Chiquita takes a stand and uses interactive advertising in a corporate responsibility context to make sensitive topics understandable.
